Dairy Insurance Plan
Dairy Livestock Insurance provides protection against the death of animals from disease and loss of income for dairy cattle in Nova Scotia.
Coverage
Dairy animals are covered against losses caused by the following diseases:
- Fibrinous Pneumonia (Shipping Fever)
- Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (respiratory form IBR)
- Reportable Diseases designated pursuant to the Health of Animals Act (Canada)
In addition to coverage provided against the loss of animals due to disease, a loss of income benefit may be paid if your gross monthly income from the sale of milk falls below 50% of your average monthly income. The perils covered by this benefit include:
- Diseases listed for livestock coverage
- Dairy building fire
- Dairy building collapse due to ice or snow
- Wind
Loss of income payments can be made for up to 4 months.
Reporting and Claiming for Livestock Losses
When an insured animal dies or must be destroyed due to an insurable disease, you must notify the Commission within 48 hours of the death of the animal. A written statement from your herd veterinarian signifying the cause of death is also required. Necropsy(s) must be performed by the attending veterinarian, or the carcass forwarded to the Provincial Pathology Laboratory for confirmation of the cause of loss.
Reporting and Claiming for Income Losses
When you apply for a claim for loss of income, you must provide confirmation of the preceding 12 months of your milk sales. The Commission will then calculate an average monthly income and will make claim payments each month for any income shortfall below 50% of the average monthly income. Any payment received for leasing of quota is considered income. Loss of Income claim payments can be made for up to 4 months.
Premium Cost Sharing
Clients are responsible for 100% of the premiums for livestock insurance programs while 100% of administration expenses are the responsibility of the Province of Nova Scotia.
