Wildlife Compensation Program

The Wildlife Compensation Program provides compensation to Nova Scotia farmers that are registered under the Nova Scotia Farm Registration Program who experience damage to eligible agriculture crops or loss of eligible livestock caused by specific wildlife species. This program will compliment crop insurance plans that list wildlife as an insurable peril and will also operate on its own for farmers who do not currently have insurance. The below information is intended to be a quick reference only. For the full Wildlife Compensation Policy click here

Reporting and Claiming

Farmers must notify the Commission as soon as possible and not later than 72 hours after the loss or damage has occurred. The cause, or probable cause, of damage or loss must be confirmed by the Commission. Farmers must follow industry production and protection standards.

For crop compensation the farmer must incur a loss of at least or 2 acres or $250. The Commission will determine values per acre, or any other appropriate unit of measure, and will publish these values annually.

For livestock compensation farmers may claim for the loss or damage of one or more animals. The Commission will determine the value of different kinds and classes of livestock based on the commercial market value of livestock of the kind or class and will publish these values annually.

The current wildlife compensation values are available on the About page of this website. Wildlife Compensation payments are limited to 80% of the values set by the Commission.

Cost Sharing

Wildlife compensation payments are cost shared 60% by the federal government and 40% by the provincial government under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (SCAP).

Administration expenses are 100% the responsibility of the Province of Nova Scotia.

Farmers are not responsible for any premiums to participate in the wildlife compensation program.
